According to Maiuri, the brick half-columns were originally stuccoed and painted red and are topped with Corinthian capitals adorned with winged Victories, and a decorated terracotta architrave above the door.

According to Maiuri, this small open courtyard to the side of the entrance and on a higher level than the rooms, had the double function of being the atrium to light and air the house, and to collect the rainwater from the roof into the cistern.
